The Best Food To Eat During Winter
As with every season, eating habits will undoubtedly change and winter really is a time when everyone fattens up just a bit everyone talks about their holiday weight’ or festive plump’, and it’s true ” but you need not pile on the pounds.
Whilst winter might not produce seasonal food quite as exciting or vibrant as summer’s colourful collection of berries, you can still find a plethora of delectable fruits to eat. A particularly festive fruit to enjoy is cranberries, most notable for their inclusion on the dinner table in jelly, which can provide a great amount of energy, nutrition and versatility ” delicious as part of a compote, or simply dried so as to pick at them or on your cereal.
With the cold weather, it is likely that your body is going to crave more carbohydrates, which is often how people gain the weight; simply switch to better carbs, such as pumpkins, whole grains (quinoa, oats) and sweet potatoes, all of which make for a good, hearty, but healthy soup or stew. A particular favorite of mine is a sweet potato curry, complemented by kidney beans and
kale chuck in enough spice and you’re sure not to feel the cold!
Try and cut down on dairy products as these can lead to chesty coughs and increased mucous if or when you come down with a winter cold. You should also cut down on caffeinated drinks and alcohol as these will put more pressure onto your liver which is already working hard to keep you healthy in the cold.
In terms of vitamins, it is vital to up your intake of vitamin D whether through foods such as fish and egg or through supplements due to there being less sunlight during the daytime (particularly if you are working a 9-5 job), you may feel tired all the time and unwell; vitamin D will help restore your body’s balance and make you feel a bit more human. If you are also suffering from a cold, vitamin C is an absolute must studies have shown that additional vitamin C can make your cold milder and get rid of it quicker.
Obviously, the best thing to do this winter is keep yourself warm with a
healthy supply of hot drinks, soups and stews, and the beauty of this food is
that you can make a large amount and eat it the following days, making it one
of the most frugal times of the year also.
